Home / Parenting / Newborns / A DIY hero badge for brand new siblings

"Hey, he’s with me!"

A new arrival in the family can often make kids feel a bit befuddled. Here’s a sweet (and 110% official) way to keep your little one feeling special when your littler one arrives. It’s a DIY hero badge that confirms their status as official protector and snuggler of their tiny sibling. To be flashed at friends, family, enthusiastic puppies and so on. We’ve made ours a bit like a police badge but you can go sporty, or sparkly, or seafaring—whatever makes them smile. There’s even a Hero Skills Checklist (the Department of New Arrivals is very thorough). Happy badging!

You will need:

  • cardboard
  • paper
  • scissors
  • glue
  • felt pens
  • paint
  • at least one hero

Let’s make a hero badge

Step 1

Step 1

Print and cut out the hero checklist. Check competencies of the hero-to-be. Can they train a dragon to sit and stay for a biscuit?

Step 2

Step 2

Keeping little fingers away, cut out the shapes shown above from cardboard of varying thicknesses. You’ll need a large rectangle, a shield, a circle, a smaller circle and a banner.

Step 3

Step 3

Paint your shapes different colours. You can get creative with your palette (though heroes tend to be partial to a dab of gold).

Step 4

Step 4

Glue the small circle and banner to the larger circle.

Step 5

Step 5

Using felt pens, write “Official Protector Of” around the large circle, and the newborn’s name on the banner. (Grown-ups help younger kids with this). Then ask your hero to draw their baby sibling in the centre.

Step 6

Step 6

Draw and cut out a stork emblem from some paper. Make sure he’s the same width as your shield, with an imperious beak.

Step 7

Step 7

Perch your stork (with glue) at the top of the shield. Then stick the badge you made earlier on top. Wowzer!

Step 8

Step 8

Cut out the oath, and ask your little hero to sign their name and the baby’s name. If you’re being super official, they can put one hand on their favourite book while taking the oath.

Step 9

Step 9

Fold the large cardboard rectangle in half to make a wallet, then glue the shield and oath inside.

Step 10

Step 10

Time for your hero to flash their badge. Show them how to hold the top part and let the bottom bit drop down, movie-cop style. Ta da!
