Announcing the Lost My Name Story Studio: A call for story people!

The short version of this post...

We’re looking for brilliant writers and illustrators, with experience of children’s entertainment projects, to join our Story Studio and help develop our next round of incredibly personalised children’s books.

If you’d like to help, we’d love to hear from you, so please get in touch with Nick and David at Lost My Name by filling out this form.

We read every application and aim to get back to you within 48 hours Monday - Friday.

Thanks so much, we can’t wait to hear from you, and please tell your friends!

The long version of this post...

At Lost My Name we create incredible personalised books that inspire children and adults to believe that anything is possible.

We’ve had huge success with our first two titles. We’ve sold over 850,000 copies of Lost My Name so far (and were the best selling children’s picture book in the UK last year), and the reception to The Journey Home has blown us away.

But we’re just getting started. We see our super-high-quality personalised books as an entirely new type of narrative product. They’re like books. But they’re also like games. And episodic media. And software. And they’re co-created. And co-consumed. It’s fascinating, and we’ve only just scratched the surface.

On top of our creative innovation, we think that the ‘full stack’ operation we’ve built represents a new type of creative platform for developing these narrative products. Our team of 80 full time people in London invents, markets, sells, prints, ships and supports everything in-house. This gives us huge advantages in terms of time to market, technical opportunities, customer relationships and ability to pursue multidisciplinary innovation.

In short, we’re very excited and very ambitious about where we think we can take these new types of stories, and we’ve got the people and systems to do it. Well, almost...

That’s where you come in. Hopefully.

We now want to build out the creative core of our company and invest significantly in a wide range of new titles and products. We’re calling this the Story Studio. And we want to fill this Story Studio with brilliant, surprising, ambitious, and slightly bonkers people - writers, illustrators and anyone with experience developing ambitious, memorable kids’ and family entertainment.

You’ll be joining a collaborative, supportive, multidisciplinary environment. We don’t silo people or projects at Lost My Name. From day one you should expect to be working alongside technologists, designers, analysts, marketers and many other disciplines.

We’re currently expecting to build tiny teams of at least one writing-focused person and one visually-focused person, with shared technical support.

We want to commission projects of between 1-3 months initially to get the stories up to a greenlight decision, after which you’d be involved in taking the story to market.

We want to start projects as soon as possible.

Oh, and you’ll need to be able to come and work from our East London studio for most of the project. Having people together in the same space is important for us.

If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved with, and you have the skills and experience to help us, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch with Nick and David at Lost My Name by filling out this form.

We read every application and aim to get back to you within 48 hours Monday - Friday.

Thanks so much, we can’t wait to hear from you, and please tell your friends!

P.S - The legals

We’ve had lots of conversations about royalties, IP, licensing and legacy deals internally and externally at Lost My Name as we were creating Story Studio - it’s something we know we must address and be upfront about as we expand our network.

After our conversations, we’ve decided that this current opportunity is on a work-for-hire basis, where we would fully own the rights to the work. This is partly because this opportunity is based on building on concepts and treatments we’ve already initiated internally.

Of course you would be credited on any work that gets published - in fact we put the names of everyone in the company in every book. We see our work as a shared endeavour. Our stories never end - we work on making them better, all the time.

We will pay you well for your time, and provide a super-creative and supportive environment to get your ideas out into the world - and we hope this initial phase will grow over time.

We know this won’t suit all of you - but why not fill in the form and come in for a chat to see if it does?
